How to install shower head

Installing a shower head is quick and easy. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the water supply: Usually not necessary for standard shower heads, but recommended for safety.
  2. Remove the old shower head: Unscrew the existing shower head from the shower arm by turning counterclockwise. Use a wrench if needed, protecting the finish with a cloth.
  3. Clean the threads: Remove any old plumber’s tape or mineral deposits from the shower arm threads.
  4. Apply plumber’s tape: Wrap Teflon tape around the shower arm threads to prevent leaks.
  5. Attach the new shower head: Screw the new shower head onto the arm clockwise. Hand-tighten, then slightly tighten with a wrench if needed.
  6. Check for leaks: Turn on the water and inspect. If water leaks from the connection, tighten slightly more.

Tip: For handheld or combo shower heads, ensure all washers and attachments are correctly installed. Adjust spray settings and hose position as needed.

Maintenance: Clean your shower head regularly to prevent mineral buildup and maintain optimal water flow.

How to clean shower head

Keeping your shower head clean ensures strong water flow and prevents mineral buildup. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove the shower head (if possible): Unscrew it from the shower horse.
  2. Soak in vinegar: Place the shower head in a bowl of white vinegar for 30 minutes to 1 hour to dissolve mineral deposits.
  3. Scrub gently: Use an old toothbrush to scrub nozzles and surfaces to remove stubborn deposits.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the shower head with warm water to remove vinegar and loosened debris.
  5. Reattach and run water: Screw the shower head back and run hot water for 1–2 minutes to flush remaining debris.

Tip: If your shower head is fixed and cannot be removed, fill a plastic bag with vinegar, place it over the shower head, and secure it with a rubber band. Let it soak for 30–60 minutes, then scrub and rinse.

Frequency: For areas with hard water, clean your shower head every 1–2 months to maintain optimal performance.

How to change a shower head

Changing a shower head is simple and can improve water flow and shower experience. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the water supply: While most showers can be changed without shutting off the main water, it’s safer to ensure no water is running.
  2. Remove the old shower head: Use your hand or an adjustable wrench to unscrew the existing shower head from the shower arm. Turn counterclockwise. Protect finishes with a cloth if using a wrench.
  3. Clean the threads: Remove any old plumber’s tape or mineral deposits from the shower arm threads.
  4. Apply plumber’s tape: Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the shower arm to prevent leaks.
  5. Install the new shower head: Screw the new shower head onto the arm clockwise. Hand-tighten first, then slightly tighten with a wrench if necessary.
  6. Check for leaks: Turn on the water and inspect for leaks. Tighten slightly if needed.

Tip: If your new shower head has multiple spray settings or is a handheld combo, make sure all washers are correctly placed to avoid leaks.

Frequency: Replace your shower head every 1–3 years or sooner if water flow is reduced or the shower head is corroded.

How to fix a dripping shower head

A dripping shower head usually means a worn washer, mineral buildup, or a loose connection. Follow these steps to fix it:

  1. Turn off the water supply: Either at the shower valve or main water supply.
  2. Remove the shower head: Unscrew it from the shower arm. Protect finishes with a cloth if using a wrench.
  3. Inspect and clean: Washer: Check the rubber washer inside the shower head. Replace if worn or cracked.
Mineral deposits: Soak the shower head in white vinegar for 30–60 minutes and scrub with a toothbrush
  4. Reattach the shower head: Wrap Teflon tape around the shower arm threads and screw the shower head back on.
  5. Test for leaks: Turn on the water and check if dripping stops. Tighten slightly if needed.

Tip: Regular cleaning of your shower head and replacing worn washers can prevent future drips.

Extra Advice: If your shower head is old or heavily corroded, consider replacing it with a new handheld or combo shower head for better performance.
